“ Is it fairies ? ” asked Amy . “ It’s Santa Claus , ” said Beth . “ Mother did it , ” said Meg , smiling her sweetest smile . “ All wrong , ” said Mrs March . “ Old Mr Laurence sent it . ” Mr Laurence was the rich old gentleman who lived in the big stone house next door . He had heard about the breakfast from Hannah , and he had sent the supper to show his respect for the girls . He was said to be very proud and to keep his grandson shut up in the house . The boy had looked over the fence at them once or twice , and Jo , who liked boys , very much wanted to know him . II . The Laurence Boy A few days later Meg and Jo were invited to a New Year’s Eve party at the house of Mrs Gardiner , a friend of Meg’s . They had only their old poplin dresses to wear . Jo’s was burnt at the back , because she always stood too close to the fire . “ You must sit still all the evening and keep your back out of sight , ” said Meg . “ The front is all right . ” Meg wore a pair of new high shoes that were much too small for her , and she would not say how much they hurt . Each girl had one good glove and one stained one , so they decided to wear one good glove each and carry the bad one . At the party Meg soon began to dance . But Jo did not like girls ’ talk , and no one asked her to dance , so she stood with her back to the wall . When she saw a big red - headed young man coming towards her , she was afraid that he would ask her to dance . So she slipped behind a curtain into a small room . Unluckily , another shy person had chosen the same place . It was the Laurence boy . “ Dear me , I didn’t know anyone was here ! ” said Jo . But the boy laughed and told her to stay . He was a tall lad with curly black hair , brown skin and big black eyes , and he was very polite . They had a lovely talk . His name was Theodore Laurence , but he asked her to call him Laurie . He had been at school in Europe , and he described Switzerland and Paris . Jo liked him at once . She thought that he would be a good model for a hero in one of her stories . When the music began again , Laurie asked her to dance . Jo explained about her burnt dress , so they danced in the long empty hall outside , where nobody could see them . He had learnt the German way of dancing , and it was great fun . Then Meg called her sister . When Jo went to her , she found Meg lying on a sofa , pale and holding her foot . “ Those silly shoes ! ” said Meg . “ I’ve turned my ankle , and it hurts so much that I can hardly stand . I don’t know how I’m ever going to get home . ”
