In the parlour there stood a little cabinet piano , with a letter on the shiny lid addressed to “ Miss Elizabeth March ” . Mr Laurence wrote that he had never had slippers that suited him so well . He was giving her the piano , he said , because it had belonged to his little granddaughter , who had died . Beth trembled and turned pale . Then she did something that surprised everyone very much . She went straight across the garden to the big house and knocked at the study door . When she went in and saw his hand held out , she put her arms around his neck and kissed him . The old gentleman was so pleased that he forgot to be gruff . From that day Beth was not afraid of him at all . Amy , meanwhile , was having her own troubles . All the girls at school were buying pickled limes , and they gave them to each other as presents . Amy owed a dozen limes to her friends , and she had no money to pay for them . Meg gave her a quarter of a dollar , and she bought twenty - four limes . For a short time she was the most important girl in the class . But Mr Davis , the teacher , had said that no limes were allowed in his school . A jealous girl told him that Amy had some in her desk . He made Amy throw them out of the window , two by two . Then he struck her hand several times with his ruler , and he made her stand in front of the class for fifteen minutes . It did not hurt her much , but it was the first time that anyone had ever hit her . When she went home , she told her mother everything , and she said that she would never go back . Mrs March agreed that Amy could study at home with Beth . “ I don’t approve of hitting children , ” she said , “ and I shall write to Mr Davis . But you broke the rules , and you deserved some punishment for that . You are getting to be rather proud , my dear , and it is quite time you set about correcting it . Real talent is never wasted , but the great charm of all power is modesty . ” IV . Jo Meets Apollyon One Saturday afternoon Meg and Jo were getting ready to go to the theatre with Laurie . Amy wanted to go too , but nobody had invited her . “ Where are you going ? ” asked Amy . “ I know ! You’re going to see The Seven Castles . Oh , please let me come ! Mother said that I might see it , and I’ve got my money ready . ” “ Laurie only asked us , ” said Meg gently . “ It wouldn’t be polite to bring you . Besides , your eyes are still weak , and the lights might hurt them . ” “ You can’t go , Amy , ” said Jo crossly , “ so don’t be a baby . ” “ You’ll be sorry for this , Jo March ! ” cried Amy , as the door closed behind them .
