VI . Castles in the Air One fine summer day Laurie invited the March girls to a picnic , which he called Camp Laurence . Some English friends were staying with him : Kate Vaughn , who was older and rather proud , her young brothers Fred and Frank , and their little sister Grace . Mr Brooke , Laurie’s tutor , came too . He was a quiet young man with honest brown eyes , and he spoke very little , but Meg noticed that he looked at her often . They rowed up the river in two boats and spent the day in a green field . The young people played games and ate a large lunch on the grass . In the afternoon they played a game in which each person told part of a story and then stopped at an exciting moment , so that the next person had to continue it . Mr Brooke began with a knight , Kate added a ghost , and Jo filled the tale with pirates , while Laurie made everyone laugh . Later Meg sat with Kate and Mr Brooke under a tree . Kate was surprised to learn that Meg worked as a governess , and she looked at her with a cool , polite pity that hurt Meg’s pride . “ Young ladies in America love independence as much as their ancestors did , and they are admired and respected for supporting themselves , ” said Mr Brooke quickly , and Meg was grateful to him . Then he offered to read German with her , and he told her that she had a good accent . When the boats went home in the evening , everyone agreed that it had been a delightful day . A few days later Laurie found the four sisters on a hill above the river . They were sitting in the shade with their work , and they called the place the Delectable Mountain , after the hills in The Pilgrim’s Progress . From there they could see the river , the fields and the distant blue hills , and they liked to imagine that the far - off sky was the Celestial City . “ Wouldn’t it be fun if all the castles in the air which we make could come true , and we could live in them ? ” said Jo . “ I’ve made so many it would be hard to choose , ” said Laurie . “ I’d like to see the world , and then settle in Germany and have as much music as I choose . I’m to be a famous musician myself , and never to be bothered about money or business . That’s my favourite castle . What’s yours , Meg ? ” Meg wanted a lovely house , full of beautiful things , with plenty of money and servants . Jo wanted a stable full of Arabian horses and rooms piled high with books . “ I want to do something splendid before I go into my castle , ” she said , “ something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead . I think I shall write books , and get rich and famous . ” Beth said quietly , “ Mine is to stay at home safe with Father and Mother , and help take care of the family . ”
