Amy wanted to be the best artist in the world . “ I want to go to Rome , and do fine pictures , and be famous , ” she said . Meg looked at the distant hills and said thoughtfully that most of their castles were made of pleasant dreams . Jo laughed and said that she would keep the key of hers in her pocket . They agreed to meet in ten years and see how many of their wishes had come true . Laurie said that his grandfather wanted him to go into business in India , and that he would rather be shot . “ If only one of you girls was with him , I could run off tomorrow , ” he said , and the girls told him to be patient and kind to the old man . Jo had a secret of her own that autumn . For weeks she had been writing busily in the garret , where she sat on an old sofa with her rat , Scrabble , for company . One day she went into town alone and left two stories at a newspaper office . Laurie had followed her , and on the way home they shared secrets . “ I know where Meg’s other glove is , ” he said . “ Mr Brooke keeps it in his pocket . Isn’t that romantic ? ” Jo was not pleased at all . She did not want anyone to come and take Meg away . “ I wish you hadn’t told me , ” she said crossly , and she ran down the hill so fast that her hat flew off and her hair came down . Two weeks later Jo came into the room with a newspaper . She sat on the sofa and offered to read a story aloud . It was called “ The Rival Painters ” , and her sisters liked it very much . “ Who wrote it ? ” asked Beth , who had caught sight of Jo’s face . Jo sat up , put down the paper and said in a loud voice , “ Your sister ! ” The family was full of joy . Meg could not believe it , Amy admired the story a great deal , and Beth jumped up and down . Hannah came in to say “ Well , I never did ! ” in great surprise . The newspaper had not paid Jo anything yet , but she was happy . “ I shall write more , ” she said , “ and be able to support myself and help the girls . ” VII . A Telegram November came , and it was a grey , cold month . “ November is the most disagreeable month in the whole year , ” said Meg , as she stood at the window . “ That’s the reason I was born in it , ” said Jo . A few minutes later there was a sharp ring at the door , and Hannah came in with a telegram . Mrs March read the short message , and her face turned white . Then she dropped back into her chair . Jo picked up the paper and read it aloud in a frightened voice : “ Mrs March : Your husband is very ill . Come at once . S . Hale , Blank Hospital , Washington . ”
