News from Washington came every day . Mr Brooke wrote that Mr March was dangerously ill , but that the presence of his wife was already doing him good . The girls wrote long letters back , and they tried to sound brave and cheerful in all of them . Meg wrote about the house , Jo wrote funny stories , Beth wrote in a careful little hand , and Amy wrote with many spelling mistakes about her lessons and her nose . Hannah added a short note of her own , in which she promised that she would keep the girls in order and save the money carefully . Laurie wrote a funny page with a drawing at the bottom , and old Mr Laurence sent his respects . At home he sent fruit and flowers , Laurie came in every evening to cheer them up , and Hannah kept the house as clean and quiet as a church . For a few days everything seemed to be going well , and the sisters began to believe that the worst was over . VIII . Dark Days For a week the girls were very good . Then they began to grow careless . They went back to their own pleasures , and they forgot some of their mother’s words . Only Beth kept on as before . Every day she visited the Hummels , who were still very poor . “ Meg , I wish you’d go and see the Hummels , ” said Beth one day . “ Mother told us not to forget them . ” But Meg had a headache , and Jo had a cold , and Amy was busy . So Beth went alone . She came back late , and she went straight upstairs into her mother’s room . When Jo found her there , Beth looked strange and white . “ Oh , Jo , the baby is dead , ” she said . “ It died in my lap before the doctor came . He said that it was scarlet fever , and he told me to go home and take medicine at once , or I would have it too . ” Meg and Jo had had scarlet fever when they were small , but Beth and Amy had not . Hannah sent for Dr Bangs , and Amy was sent away immediately to Aunt March . Amy did not want to go , because she thought her aunt’s house was dull and gloomy . Only when Laurie promised to visit her every day did she agree . Beth was very ill , much more ill than anyone had expected . The whole neighbourhood seemed to feel it . The milkman , the baker and the butcher asked about her every morning , poor Mrs Hummel came to apologise for her own thoughtlessness , and old Mr Laurence locked the grand piano , because he could not bear to be reminded of the gentle little neighbour who had made the evenings so pleasant for him . Laurie came and went like a restless ghost . Hannah and the doctor did not want to frighten Mrs March , who could not leave her husband . So the letters to Washington said nothing about the fever . Jo nursed Beth day and night , which was not hard , because Beth was a patient little sufferer who bore her pain without a word as long as she could . Meg stayed at home so that she would not carry the fever to the Kings , and she felt a little wicked every time she sealed another cheerful letter to Washington . Sometimes Beth did not know her sisters . She lay in bed and moved her fingers on the cover , as if she were playing her little piano . She called for her mother , and nobody could comfort her .
