That evening the voice in the tower did not sing . One night , when she could not sleep , she heard breathing outside her door . It was Quasimodo , who was asleep on the stones across her doorway . Meanwhile , in his cell in the cloister , the archdeacon had heard that she was alive . He shut himself in for weeks . From his window he could see her little room , and he often saw her there with the goat , and at times with Quasimodo . A terrible jealousy grew in him , a jealousy of the deaf hunchback . One night he took the key of the red door , which led from the cloister into the church , and climbed up to her room . She woke up and saw his face in the light of a lamp , and then he was beside her , holding her in his arms . “ Go away , you monster ! You murderer ! ” she cried . “ Have pity ! ” said the priest . “ Love me ! ” She fought him with all her strength , but he was stronger . She fell to the floor , and her hand touched a small cold thing . It was Quasimodo’s whistle . She put it to her lips and blew as hard as she could . At once the priest was lifted into the air by a powerful arm , and he saw a large knife shining above his head . He was thrown to the floor , and a heavy knee pressed down on his chest . In the dark , Quasimodo did not know who he was . “ No blood on her ! ” said the bell - ringer , and he dragged the man out of the room to kill him outside . But outside the moon was shining , and Quasimodo saw his master’s face . He shook , let go of the priest and stepped back . Then he knelt down and held out his knife . “ Master , ” he said , “ you can do what you like afterwards , but kill me first . ” The priest reached for the knife , but Esmeralda was quicker . She took it out of Quasimodo’s hand and held it up . “ Come here , then , ” she said to the priest , and she laughed . “ I know that Phoebus is not dead ! ” The priest kicked Quasimodo to the ground and ran away down the dark stairs . Quasimodo picked up the whistle and gave it back to her . “ It was getting rusty , ” he said , and he left her alone . Back in his cell , the priest said again and again the same words : “ Nobody shall have her . ” XIII . The Attack on Notre - Dame A few days later , the archdeacon met Gringoire in a quiet street near the river . The poet had gone back to the Court of Miracles after the trial , because the thieves were good company and gave him food , and he was now writing a book about the stones of old churches . When the priest asked about his wife , Gringoire said that he had not thought much about her lately , although he often thought about the goat .
