Just then the sound of horses came from the streets around the square . It was the king’s soldiers . Louis XI was staying in Paris , and when he heard that the people had risen against Notre - Dame to save a witch , he gave his orders at once : the thieves were to be killed and the witch was to be hanged . Now his archers rode into the square with their swords and lances , and at their head was Captain Phoebus de Châteaupers . The thieves fought bravely , but they had no chance . Clopin Trouillefou died fighting , and the rest ran away or were cut down . When the fight was over , Quasimodo fell on his knees and thanked God . Then he ran to Esmeralda’s little room to tell her that she was safe . But the room was empty . XIV . The Little Shoe Esmeralda had woken up when the fighting began , and when she saw the torches and heard the shouts , she had thought that the crowd had come to kill her . She was hiding in her room , shaking with fear , when two men came to the door . One of them was Gringoire , and the other was a man in a long black cloak , whose face was hidden . “ It is me , Pierre Gringoire , ” said the poet , “ do not be afraid . This man is a friend , and we have come to save you . ” The goat ran to Gringoire at once and rubbed itself against his legs . The man in black led them down the dark stairs , through the empty church and out through the little red door into the cloister . They walked to the end of the island , where a small boat was hidden under the trees by the water . The man rowed them across the river , while the noise of the battle went on behind them . Gringoire sat with the goat on his knees and talked all the time . The stranger did not say a word , and Esmeralda felt a strange fear of him . As soon as the boat touched the other side , Gringoire jumped out with the goat in his arms and ran off into the dark streets , because he had decided to save Djali . The girl was left alone with the man in black . He took her hand in his cold hand and pulled her without a word towards the Place de Grève , where the gallows stood in the middle of the empty square . There he stopped and pushed back his hood , and she saw that it was the priest . “ Listen , ” he said . “ You see what this is . You will choose between me and this . The king’s soldiers are looking for you in every street , but I can save you , and all is ready for us to escape . Only say that you will be mine . ” She broke away from him and threw her arms round the foot of the gallows . “ It is less horrible to me than you are , ” she said .
