There was one man in the world whom he loved , and that was Claude Frollo . The priest had taken him in , fed him , taught him to speak and to read , and given him the bells . Quasimodo obeyed him like a dog . He would have died for him without a moment’s doubt . The two of them talked with signs that only they knew . In 1482 Quasimodo was about twenty , and Claude Frollo was about thirty - six . The priest was respected by everyone in Paris for his learning . But the people of the streets were afraid of him . They said that he studied magic and tried to make gold in a secret cell at the top of one of the towers . They said that the hunchback was his servant devil , and that one day the devil would take his soul . The priest had also been unlucky with his brother . Little Jehan had grown into a student who never studied . He drank , played dice , fought in the streets and spent all his money . Then he came to Claude for more . Claude still loved him , but the boy brought him only grief . In those years the archdeacon had become a hard and gloomy man . He had worked all his life . He had prayed and fasted , and he had kept away from women , because a priest must not marry . But lately something had changed in him . He often came out of his cell in the evening and stood at the top of the tower . He looked down for a long time at the square in front of the church , where a gypsy girl sometimes danced with her goat . VI . The Pillory On the morning after the feast , Quasimodo was brought before a judge for his attack on Esmeralda . The judge , Master Florian , was fat and red - faced . He was deaf , although he tried very hard to hide it . So now a deaf judge asked questions of a deaf prisoner . “ What is your name ? ” asked the judge . Quasimodo did not hear the question , so he said nothing . The judge thought that the prisoner had answered , so he went on . “ And how old are you ? ” Quasimodo said nothing . “ And what is your trade ? ” Again there was silence . The judge said , “ Very good , ” and wrote it down . The people in the court began to laugh . The judge thought that Quasimodo had said something rude to make them laugh , and he became very angry and shouted at him . Then Quasimodo , who thought that the judge was asking his name , said in his loud , rough voice , “ Quasimodo . ” When the judge asked another question , the bell - ringer said that he would be twenty at Saint Martin’s Day . The court laughed even more .
