At the same hour , Claude Frollo was climbing the stairs to his secret cell in the north tower when he looked out over the square . The dancer had come back to her carpet . Beside her stood a man in red and yellow clothes , who was doing tricks to earn a few coins . He was holding a chair in his teeth , with a cat sitting on the chair . The priest knew him at once and went down to the square . “ What are you doing , Master Pierre Gringoire ? ” he said . The poet was so surprised that he dropped the chair and the cat . Then he told his old teacher his whole story : the play , the Court of Miracles , the broken jug and the wedding . “ You are married to that girl ? ” said the priest , and his face went dark . “ Only by a broken jug , ” said Gringoire sadly . “ She will not let me touch her , and every night she locks her door . She is as pure as a nun , master . The old Duke of Egypt told me that she is a lost child , and that the charm she wears round her neck will help her find her parents one day . But the charm will only work if she stays pure . She also has a dagger and the goat with its horns . ” The priest breathed more easily . “ And does she love no one ? ” “ I do not think so , ” said the poet , “ but there is a word that she often says to herself : Phoebus . I do not know why . She has taught the goat to make it with letters . The goat loves me almost as much as it loves her , you know . ” At the name Phoebus , the priest turned pale , and he walked away without saying goodbye . VIII . The Monk in the Black Cloak Since the day of the pillory , the bells of Notre - Dame had been strangely quiet . Quasimodo still rang them , but not with the old joy . His heart had changed . He often stood for hours at the top of the tower and looked down at the square where the gypsy danced . His master had changed too . People said that the archdeacon spent more and more time alone in his cell at the top of the north tower , and that he often stayed there all night . On the wall of that cell , among many words in Latin and Hebrew , there was one Greek word , cut deep into the stone : ANANKE . It means “ fate ” . One day at the end of March , young Jehan Frollo climbed the tower stairs to ask his brother for money . He found the priest sitting at his table , with his head in his hands . Jehan told him a long and sad story . At last Claude gave him a purse full of coins and told him to go . Just then a visitor came to the door . It was the king’s lawyer in the church court , Master Jacques Charmolue , who came often to talk with the archdeacon about magic and gold . Jehan hid under a table and listened .
