“ Thank you for the wine , ” he said happily , after he had embraced them . “ What wine ? ” asked Athos . “ The Anjou wine that you sent me . ” “ We sent you no wine , ” said Porthos . Athos read the letter , and his face became serious . D’Artagnan’s face went white . The four friends ran back to his tent . Brisemont was lying on the floor . Before the meal , he had drunk a little of the wine because he was still weak . Now he was in terrible pain , and he looked at d’Artagnan with eyes full of fear . “ You pretended to forgive me , ” he cried , “ and then you poisoned me ! ” “ No , Brisemont , I swear it ! ” said d’Artagnan . “ The wine was meant for me . ” But a few minutes later , Brisemont was dead . The four friends looked at each other in silence . Milady had tried to kill d’Artagnan three times now . “ We cannot live like this , ” said Athos . “ We are at war , and that woman is behind us with her knives and her poison . ” “ And she knows where Constance is , ” said d’Artagnan . “ She will try to hurt her to hurt me . ” “ Then we must find the convent first , ” said Aramis . “ I shall write to my friend in Tours . She knows the Queen well . ” That night , d’Artagnan slept a little better , because his friends were with him again . X . The Inn of the Red Dovecot One cold night in December , Athos , Porthos and Aramis were riding back to the camp from an inn called the Red Dovecot , where they had spent the evening . On a dark road , they met a few horsemen in long cloaks . The leader of the riders asked them who they were , and when Athos answered , the man pulled down his cloak a little . It was the Cardinal . “ I am going to the Red Dovecot , ” he said . “ The roads are not safe at night . Come with me , gentlemen , and guard me . ” At the inn , the Cardinal went upstairs to a room where somebody was waiting for him , and the three friends waited in the room below . Porthos and Aramis played dice , while Athos walked up and down . In one corner of the room there was an old stove with a broken pipe , which went up into the room above . Each time Athos walked past it , he heard voices . He stopped and listened , and then he made a sign to his friends to be silent . “ Listen , Milady , ” the Cardinal was saying . “ This is important . Sit down , and let us talk . ” “ Milady ! ” whispered Athos , and his face went white . The three friends sat close to the pipe and heard everything . The Cardinal told Milady that a small ship was waiting for her at the mouth of the river Charente . She was to sail to England that same night and go to the Duke of Buckingham . She must tell him that the Cardinal knew all his secrets , every visit he had made to the Queen , every disguise he had worn and every letter she had written . If the Duke did not stop the war , the Cardinal would tell the King everything , and the Queen would be ruined .
