“ D’Artagnan has insulted me , ” said Milady . “ He will die . ” Athos took out his pistol and pointed it at her head . “ Madame , ” he said , “ give me the paper that the Cardinal has just signed , or I shall kill you now . ” Milady saw from his face that he meant it . She took a paper from her dress and gave it to him . Athos put the pistol back in his belt , went to the lamp and read it . “ It is by my order and for the good of the state that the bearer of this has done what he has done . Richelieu . 3 December 1627 . ” With this paper , a person could do anything , even murder , and nobody could punish them . Athos put it in his pocket . “ And now , Madame , ” he said , “ I have taken your teeth , viper . Bite if you can . ” He went out without another word . Then he rode after the Cardinal and joined his friends on the road as if nothing had happened . Early the next morning , Milady’s ship sailed for England . XI . Breakfast in the Bastion The next morning , the four friends needed to talk , but there was nowhere quiet in the camp . Every tent and every inn was full of soldiers , and the Cardinal had spies everywhere . They went into an inn called the Parpaillot , but it was crowded with dragoons , Swiss soldiers and guards , and somebody was always listening . During the night , d’Artagnan’s company had attacked the bastion of Saint - Gervais , a small fort near the walls of La Rochelle , and the soldiers at the next table were asking him about it . The French had blown a hole in its walls , and then they had left it . Suddenly Athos had an idea . “ Monsieur de Busigny , ” said Athos to a young officer , “ I will make a bet with you . My three friends and I will go and eat our breakfast in the bastion of Saint - Gervais . We will stay there for one hour , whatever the enemy does to drive us out . ” Everyone laughed , and the officer accepted the bet . The loser would pay for a dinner for eight people . So the four friends , with Grimaud carrying a basket of food and wine , walked out of the camp towards the bastion . A crowd of soldiers watched them go . “ Now , ” said Athos , when they had arrived , “ we can talk as long as we like , and nobody will hear us . The walls of this bastion have no ears . ” They found some guns among the dead soldiers in the bastion and loaded them . Then they sat down to eat . They had hardly started when a group of enemy soldiers came out of the city to repair the bastion . Athos stood up , glass in hand , and politely told them to go away . When they began to shoot , the four friends shot back . Several of the enemy fell , and the rest ran back to the city .
