XII . The Prisoner and the Puritan When Milady’s ship reached Portsmouth , a small English boat came out to meet it . A young naval officer climbed on board . He was about twenty - five , with a pale face , light brown hair and cold blue eyes . He looked at all the passengers , and then he came straight to Milady . “ Madame , ” he said politely , “ in time of war , foreigners who land in England must be taken to a safe place . Please come with me . ” “ But I am English ! ” said Milady . The officer did not answer . He took her to land in his boat and put her into a carriage . The carriage drove for an hour through the dark and stopped in front of a lonely castle near the sea . The officer led her up to a room with bars on the window and left her there . A few minutes later , the door opened again , and a man came in . It was her brother - in - law , Lord de Winter . “ Good evening , sister , ” he said with a cold smile . “ I am the governor of this castle , and of the port too . I knew that you were coming . ” Milady understood at once that someone had warned him . Her face did not change , but her heart was full of anger . “ I know everything about you , ” Lord de Winter went on . “ I know that you work for the Cardinal . I know that you came to England to hurt the Duke of Buckingham . And I know how my brother died . He was well in the morning , and he was dead by the evening . Because I loved my brother , I shall not send you to Tyburn to be hanged . But in two weeks a ship will take you far away , to our colonies in the south , and you will never come back . ” Then he called the young officer . “ This is Lieutenant Felton , ” he said . “ He is like a son to me , and he is the most honest man in England . He will guard you day and night . Felton , this woman is a monster . She is young and beautiful , but she has committed more crimes than you could read about in a year . Do not listen to her , and do not believe a word she says . ” “ I swear it , my lord , ” said Felton . Milady was alone . She had always found a way out before . She walked up and down her room and thought hard . She had two weeks , and only one person could help her : the young officer with the cold blue eyes . She watched him and soon understood that he was a Puritan , one of those strict Protestants who hated pleasure and loved God with a fierce love . The Puritans also hated the Duke of Buckingham , whom they thought a wicked man .
