When two bars had been removed , Milady climbed out of the window . The wind was so strong that it swung them both against the stone walls . Felton carried her down the ladder on his back , and at the bottom there was a boat . He rowed her out through the dark to a small ship , which he had paid for with all his money . “ The captain will wait for me until ten o’clock , ” Felton said . “ If I have not come back by then , sail without me and take her to France . ” “ And where are you going ? ” asked Milady softly , though she knew the answer very well . “ To Portsmouth , ” said Felton , “ to see the Duke of Buckingham . ” XIII . Portsmouth , 23 August 1628 Felton arrived in Portsmouth at about eight o’clock in the morning . The whole town was awake . Drums were beating in the streets , and soldiers were marching down to the harbour , because the English fleet was ready to sail for La Rochelle . He went straight to the palace where the Duke was staying . Lord de Winter had given him the order for Milady’s exile and asked him to take it to the Duke to sign . So when Felton said that he came from Lord de Winter , the guards let him in at once . At the same moment , another man arrived at the palace , covered in dust . His horse fell to its knees at the gate . He wanted to see the Duke too , but he would not give his name to anyone , so he had to wait . The Duke’s servant , Patrick , led Felton to a small room where the Duke was dressing . “ Why did Lord de Winter not come himself ? ” the Duke asked . “ He has to guard his prisoner , my lord , ” said Felton . “ Here is the order for her exile . ” The Duke took the paper , read it quickly and picked up his pen . “ Excuse me , my lord , ” said Felton , “ but do you know that the name on this paper is not the woman’s real name ? Do you know that she is Lady de Winter ? ” “ I know it very well , ” said the Duke . “ She is a very guilty woman , and she is lucky to be sent away instead of being hanged . ” “ My lord , you will not sign that order , ” said Felton , and his voice was shaking . “ Lady de Winter is an angel . You have done her a terrible wrong . Give her back her freedom . ” The Duke looked at him in surprise . “ Are you mad , sir ? Leave this room at once . ” “ You are hated by all of England , my lord , ” said Felton . “ God will punish you one day . But I shall punish you here ! ” The Duke reached for his sword and shouted for help . At that moment , Patrick opened the door . “ My lord ! ” he called . “ A letter from France ! ” “ From France ! ” cried the Duke , and for a second he forgot everything else , because he knew who the letter was from . In that second , Felton jumped forward with the knife that Milady had used on herself , and drove it into the Duke’s side .
