XIV . The Convent at Béthune Milady landed safely at Boulogne and sent a short letter to the Cardinal : “ The Duke of Buckingham will not sail for France . ” Then she went to a convent in the small town of Béthune , in the north of France , where the Cardinal had told her to wait for his orders . The abbess was kind to her , and on the first day she told Milady about another young lady who was staying in the convent . This lady had suffered a great deal because of the Cardinal , and the Queen had sent her there to keep her safe . That evening , the young lady came to Milady’s room . She was pretty and gentle , with dark hair and blue eyes , and she was very lonely . Milady pretended to be another victim of the Cardinal , and they quickly became friends . Soon the young woman told her a secret : a friend at court had written to say that someone was coming to take her away . “ Who is coming ? ” asked Milady . “ A young man I love , a Musketeer called d’Artagnan . ” Milady did not move a muscle , but inside she was burning with joy and hatred , because she understood that this was the wife of Bonacieux . The next day , the man from Meung arrived at the convent . His name was Rochefort , and he was the Cardinal’s most faithful servant . When they were alone , Milady told him everything that had happened in England , and then she told him her plan . He must send her a carriage the next day , and she would take the young woman away with her and wait for him in a safe place . “ Where ? ” asked Rochefort . Milady thought for a moment . “ At Armentières , a little town on the river Lys , because if there is danger , I can cross the river and leave France . ” Rochefort asked her to write the name down so that he would not forget it . She wrote it on a piece of paper , he put it in the lining of his hat , and then he rode away towards Paris . Milady went back to her new friend and told her a story . The carriage that was coming had been sent by her brother , she said , and it would take them both to safety , because the Cardinal’s men were looking for Constance and might arrive at any moment dressed as Musketeers . If d’Artagnan came , they would wait for him together , not far from the convent . Constance believed her and agreed . Meanwhile , the four friends were riding north as fast as they could . Aramis had received an order from the Queen , and with this paper the abbess would have to let Constance leave the convent . On the evening of 25 August , at an inn at Arras , d’Artagnan saw a horseman galloping out of the yard . The wind lifted the man’s hat for a moment , and d’Artagnan saw that it was Rochefort . He wanted to follow him , but Athos stopped him . “ He is going the other way , ” said Athos . “ Let him go , because we must save the woman . ” At that moment , a stable boy ran out with a piece of paper , calling to the stranger that he had dropped it from his hat . D’Artagnan paid the boy and opened the paper . There was only one word on it : Armentières .
