“ It is written in her hand , ” said Athos , and his face went dark . They rode on to Béthune as fast as their horses could carry them . In the convent , Milady and Constance were sitting at supper and waiting for the carriage when they heard horses on the road . Milady ran to the window , and in the evening light she saw the hats and feathers of a group of horsemen . The first one was d’Artagnan . “ It is the Cardinal’s guards ! ” she cried . “ Quick , we must run through the garden ! ” Constance tried to stand up , but her legs would not carry her , and she fell back into her chair , trembling . Outside , the carriage drove off at full speed , and there were shots . Milady looked at Constance for a second . Then she opened a ring on her finger and dropped a small red grain into Constance’s glass of wine , where it disappeared at once . “ Drink , ” she said . “ This will give you strength . ” Constance drank , and Milady ran out through the garden and disappeared . A minute later , the door burst open , and d’Artagnan ran into the room . Constance gave a cry of joy and held out her arms to him . She began to tell him about the kind lady who had helped her , but suddenly her face changed . Athos looked at the empty glass on the table and went white . “ Madame , ” he said , “ who poured this wine for you ? ” “ My friend , the Comtesse de Winter . ” The four friends cried out together . Constance began to shake with pain . She took d’Artagnan’s head in her hands , kissed him and looked at him as if her whole soul was in her eyes , and then she died in his arms . A stranger appeared in the doorway . It was Lord de Winter , who had followed Milady all the way from England and had come too late . Athos put his arm around d’Artagnan , who was weeping like a child . “ Be a man , my friend , ” he said quietly . “ Women weep for the dead , but men avenge them . ” “ Then I am ready to follow you , ” said d’Artagnan . Athos asked him for the paper with the name of the town . “ I know where she has gone , ” he said , “ and I shall deal with her , because she is my wife . ” XV . The Man in the Red Cloak That night , Athos sent the four servants to watch the roads around Armentières , and then he rode alone to the city of Lille . He knocked at the door of a lonely house outside the town , where a tall , pale man lived . The man listened to him in silence , nodded and took down a long sword and a red cloak . The next evening , the friends set off for Armentières with Lord de Winter , and a silent stranger in a red cloak and a mask rode behind them . Nobody knew who he was except Athos .
