“ Charlotte Backson , ” said Athos , “ your crimes have tired men on earth and God in heaven . If you know a prayer , say it , because you are going to die . ” They took her down to the river . The storm had passed , and a red moon was rising behind the town . Milady begged and threatened , and she offered gold to the servants , but nobody listened to her . “ Ten men against one woman ! ” she screamed . “ I am too young to die ! ” “ The woman you poisoned at Béthune was younger than you , ” said d’Artagnan , “ and she is dead . ” But when Milady cried out his name and reminded him that she had loved him , d’Artagnan could not bear it . He took a step towards her , but Athos drew his sword and stood in his way , and the young man fell on his knees and prayed . Then each of them forgave her : Athos for his ruined life , Lord de Winter for his brother and the Duke , and d’Artagnan for Constance . “ I forgive you , and I weep for you , ” said the young man . “ Die in peace . ” The executioner put her into a small boat . Athos held out some money to him as payment , but the man in the red cloak threw it into the river , saying that tonight he was not doing his job but paying a debt . He rowed across the river . On the other bank , Milady jumped out of the boat and tried to run , but she slipped in the mud and fell to her knees . From the other side , the friends saw the executioner lift his sword . The blade shone in the moonlight , and then it came down . The man wrapped her body in his red cloak and rowed out into the middle of the river . “ Let the justice of God be done ! ” he cried , and he let his heavy load fall into the deep water . XVI . Lieutenant d’Artagnan Three days later , the four friends were back in Paris , and that same evening they visited Monsieur de Tréville , who asked them politely whether they had enjoyed their little trip . “ Very much , ” said Athos . In September , the King returned to La Rochelle , and the friends rode with him . All France was talking about the death of the Duke of Buckingham . At first the Queen would not believe it , but then Laporte came back from England with the Duke’s last gifts , and she knew that it was true . The four friends rode side by side in silence , with sad faces . One day , when they had stopped at an inn on the road , a man on horseback came to the door , and d’Artagnan cried out when he saw him . It was the man from Meung . D’Artagnan drew his sword , but this time the stranger did not run away . “ I am the Chevalier de Rochefort , ” he said , “ and I arrest you in the name of the King , because the Cardinal wishes to see you . ” “ We are going to the Cardinal ourselves , ” said Athos calmly , “ and Monsieur d’Artagnan gives you his word that he will come with us . ”
