“ Who is this fool ? ” the stranger asked . “ He has a letter for Monsieur de Tréville , ” the innkeeper said quietly . When d’Artagnan opened his eyes , he was lying in a bed upstairs . His head ached , but he went to the window . Down in the yard , the stranger was standing beside a carriage , speaking to a woman inside it . She was about twenty - two , with long fair hair , large blue eyes and pink lips . She was very beautiful , but her face looked hard . “ So the Cardinal wants me to go back to England at once ? ” she asked . “ Yes , Milady . Watch the Duke carefully , and tell His Eminence everything as soon as he leaves London . ” “ And you ? ” “ I am going back to Paris . ” “ Without punishing that rude boy ? ” The stranger was about to answer , but d’Artagnan had already run down the stairs . “ That rude boy will punish you ! ” he shouted . The woman gave an order , and her carriage drove off quickly towards the north . The stranger jumped onto his horse and rode away in the opposite direction . “ Coward ! ” cried d’Artagnan , and he ran after him . But he was weak from the blows to his head , and he fell down in the street . The next morning , he found that the letter to Monsieur de Tréville was missing from his pocket . He shouted at the innkeeper , who swore that he had not taken it . “ It was the gentleman with the black moustache , ” the innkeeper said . “ He went into the kitchen , where your coat was hanging . I am sure he took it . ” D’Artagnan did not forget . He paid for his room , sold his yellow horse in Paris for three crowns , found a small room in the Rue des Fossoyeurs and went to bed dreaming of the man from Meung . He had come to Paris to become a soldier . But he had already made his first enemy , and he had already seen the face of a woman who would bring great trouble into his life . He did not know her name . He only knew that the stranger had called her Milady . II . Three Duels in One Day Monsieur de Tréville had come to Paris many years before as a poor young man from Gascony , just like d’Artagnan . Now the King trusted him completely , and the Musketeers , the King’s own soldiers , loved him like a father . The Cardinal , Richelieu , was the most powerful man in the kingdom after the King , and some people said that he was even more powerful than the King himself . He had his own guards , and there was a constant war between his guards and the King’s Musketeers . Duels were forbidden by law , but the soldiers of both sides fought in the streets almost every day .
