The four friends walked arm in arm to Tréville’s house , and everyone who saw them in the street understood what had happened . The Cardinal complained to the King , but Tréville spoke to the King first , and the King was secretly pleased . He laughed and asked to see the young Gascon who had beaten Jussac , and he gave d’Artagnan forty gold coins . Soon afterwards the young man was given a place in the guards of Monsieur des Essarts , Tréville’s brother - in - law . It was not yet the uniform of a Musketeer , but it was a beginning . From that day , Athos , Porthos , Aramis and d’Artagnan were always together . Each of them took a servant : Athos had silent Grimaud , Porthos had proud Mousqueton , Aramis had Bazin , who wanted his master to become a priest , and d’Artagnan found a young man called Planchet . They shared their money , their adventures and their dangers , and their rule was simple : all for one , and one for all . III . The Queen’s Secret A few weeks later , a small , fat man of about fifty knocked on d’Artagnan’s door . It was his landlord , Monsieur Bonacieux , who owned a shop on the ground floor of the same house . “ I have heard that you are very brave , sir , ” the man said nervously , “ so I have come to ask for your help . My wife has been taken away . ” His wife , Constance , was twenty - five , and she worked in the palace of the Louvre , where she looked after the Queen’s linen . The Queen trusted her completely . The day before , as she was coming out of the palace , some men had carried her off in the street . “ I think I know why , ” the little man whispered . “ People say that the Cardinal is watching the Queen because of the English lord , the Duke of Buckingham . He believes that the Duke has come to Paris in secret , and he thinks that my wife knows where he is . ” Then he described the man who had carried his wife away . He was a nobleman with dark eyes , a pale face and a scar on his temple . “ That is my man from Meung ! ” cried d’Artagnan . That night , the Cardinal’s men came to the house and arrested the landlord himself , and then they stayed inside his rooms and waited . Anyone who knocked on the door was caught and taken away , like a mouse in a trap . D’Artagnan lifted a board in his floor so that he could hear everything that happened in the room below . Late one evening , he heard a woman’s voice . Constance had escaped from the house where she had been kept and had come home , but the Cardinal’s men were waiting for her , and they began to tie her up . D’Artagnan did not stop to think . He took his sword , jumped out of his window into the street and burst into the shop , and the men ran away in fear .
