Constance knew that she could not ask her husband to help . While he was in prison , the little shopkeeper had been taken to the Cardinal himself , who had spoken to him kindly , called him a friend and given him a bag of gold . Now he believed that the Cardinal was a great man , and he had agreed to spy for him . So Constance went upstairs to the young man who loved her . “ I have heard everything through the floor , ” d’Artagnan said , “ and I know that you need a man who can go to London . I am ready . ” She looked at him for a long time , and then she smiled . She gave him a letter for the Duke , which he must give to nobody else , and a bag of money for the journey . It was her husband’s money , the money that the Cardinal had given him to buy his loyalty . D’Artagnan only knew that the woman he loved was asking him for help , and that the Queen of France needed him , so he ran straight to Tréville . “ I need a few days ’ leave , ” he said , “ for a journey that I cannot explain . ” Tréville looked at him with a serious face . “ Is it for someone very important ? ” “ For the most important lady in France . ” Tréville understood at once . “ Then do not go alone , ” he said . “ Take your three friends with you , because the road will be dangerous . If only one of you arrives , it will be enough . ” IV . The Road to London At two o’clock in the morning , four men and their servants rode out of Paris through the gate of Saint - Denis . Each of them knew that the Cardinal’s men might be waiting for them somewhere on the road . They arrived at Chantilly at eight o’clock and stopped at an inn for breakfast . At the table there was a stranger who wanted to drink to the health of the Cardinal . Porthos agreed , but only if the stranger would drink to the health of the King afterwards , and when the stranger refused , they were fighting in a moment . “ Go on , ” Porthos called to the others . “ I shall catch you up later . ” But he did not catch them up . An hour later , near Beauvais , the others were stopped by a group of men who seemed to be repairing the road . When the friends asked them to move , the workers threw down their tools , took out guns and began to shoot . A bullet went through Aramis’s shoulder , and the friends galloped away , but by the time they reached Crèvecoeur he could ride no further , and they had to leave him at an inn with his servant Bazin . At midnight , Athos and d’Artagnan reached Amiens and stopped at an inn . They wanted to leave early , so in the morning Athos went downstairs to pay the innkeeper . A moment later d’Artagnan heard a terrible noise . The innkeeper had shouted that Athos’s money was false , and four armed men had rushed in to attack him . “ I am caught ! ” cried Athos . “ Ride , d’Artagnan , ride ! ”
