D’Artagnan’s heart was breaking . From the description , he was almost sure that the short , fat man was Monsieur Bonacieux , who had helped the Cardinal’s men to find his own wife . He rode back to Paris and told everything to Tréville , who listened with a serious face . “ This is the Cardinal’s work , ” the captain said . “ You can do nothing at present except leave Paris , as I told you . I shall speak to the Queen , and when you come back , perhaps I shall have some good news for you . ” D’Artagnan was alone , and Constance had been carried away . He did not know where she was , or whether she was still alive , and only his three friends could help him now . The next morning , he set off along the road to the north to find them . VI . The Wife of Athos At Chantilly , d’Artagnan found Porthos in bed at the inn . He had been wounded in the duel with the stranger , and now he could not pay for his room , because a rich lady in Paris had not answered his letters . He told d’Artagnan that he had fallen and hurt his knee , and d’Artagnan smiled and promised to come back for him . At Crèvecoeur , he found Aramis in a quiet room with two churchmen . His shoulder was getting better , but he had decided to leave the army and become a priest . He talked about Latin and about his religious studies , and he refused to eat meat . “ The world is a tomb , ” he said sadly . “ I have finished with it . ” D’Artagnan understood that a lady in Paris had not written to Aramis for a long time . Then he remembered a letter which had arrived for his friend in Paris . He had brought it with him , and now he gave it to Aramis . Aramis read it , and his face changed . He jumped up and threw his religious books into the air . “ She loves me ! ” he cried . “ She had to go away , but she still loves me ! Bazin , bring us dinner , and bring meat and wine ! ” Bazin , who had hoped that his master would become a priest , went out with a sad face . Then d’Artagnan rode on to Amiens , very worried about Athos . The innkeeper turned pale when he saw him . “ Your friend is still here , ” he said , “ in my cellar . My men attacked him because we thought his money was false , but he wounded two of them and locked himself in the cellar . He has been there for twelve days , and he will not come out . He has drunk my wine and eaten my hams . I am ruined ! ”
