VII . Milady In Paris , there was news of war . The Protestants of La Rochelle , a city on the west coast of France , had refused to obey the King , and England was going to help them . Every soldier needed a horse , weapons and a uniform for the war , and the four friends had almost no money . Each of them found his money in his own way . Porthos went to church every Sunday and smiled at the wife of an old lawyer , Madame Coquenard . She was not young or pretty , but she had money in her husband’s box , and she was in love with Porthos . Aramis waited for a letter from his lady , and at last it came with a hundred and fifty gold coins inside . Athos did nothing at all . He said that something would happen , and he went on drinking his Spanish wine . D’Artagnan , meanwhile , had seen Milady again . One day , he saw her at Saint - Germain , outside Paris . She was sitting in a carriage and talking angrily in English to a young Englishman on a horse . D’Artagnan did not understand English , but he saw that the lady was unhappy , and he offered to help her . Milady looked at him for a moment , and then she told her driver to go home . The Englishman was very angry . “ Who are you , sir , to interfere in my family affairs ? ” “ I am a man who protects ladies , ” said d’Artagnan . “ And who are you ? ” “ I am Lord de Winter , and that lady is my sister - in - law . ” So they agreed to fight , four against four . D’Artagnan brought his three friends , and Lord de Winter brought three English noblemen , who did not want to fight men with such strange names as Athos , Porthos and Aramis . So each friend took his opponent aside and whispered his real name to him . Athos’s opponent was satisfied , but Athos told him calmly that he had made a mistake . “ Everyone believes that I am dead , ” Athos said , “ and I wish nobody to know that I am alive . So now I shall have to kill you . ” The Englishman thought that he was joking , but Athos was not joking . He struck only once , and his sword went through the man’s heart . Porthos wounded his man , and Aramis’s man ran away . D’Artagnan fought carefully until Lord de Winter was tired , and then he knocked the sword out of his hand . The Englishman stepped back , slipped and fell , and d’Artagnan put the point of his sword to his throat . “ I could kill you , my lord , ” he said , “ but I spare your life for the sake of your sister . ” Lord de Winter was delighted . He shook d’Artagnan’s hand , and that evening he took him to the house of his sister - in - law , Lady de Winter , in the Place Royale . She had married Lord de Winter’s younger brother , who had died and left her a widow with one child . If Lord de Winter never married , this child would have all his money .
