Milady received d’Artagnan with a beautiful smile , but when Lord de Winter told her that the young man had spared his life , a terrible look passed across her face for a second . After that , d’Artagnan visited her every evening . She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen , and he began to forget poor Constance . He knew that Milady worked for the Cardinal . He knew that she had stolen the diamond studs from the Duke of Buckingham . But he could not stop going to her house . Milady had a pretty maid called Kitty . One evening , as d’Artagnan was leaving , Kitty stopped him on the stairs and took him to her small room . “ Sir , ” she said , “ I must tell you something . My mistress does not love you . She loves another man . ” “ Who ? ” “ The Comte de Wardes . ” D’Artagnan remembered the count he had wounded at Calais . “ She has written to him many times , ” Kitty went on , “ and he never answers . I carry her letters . And she hates you , sir . She hates you very much . ” “ Why ? ” “ I do not know . I only know that she says you made her lose a fortune . If you had killed Lord de Winter in that duel , all his money would have gone to her son . ” Then Kitty went red and looked at the floor . D’Artagnan understood that the maid was in love with him . He did not love her , but he wanted to know Milady’s secrets , so he was kind to her . The next evening , Kitty gave him a letter from Milady to the Comte de Wardes . D’Artagnan opened it . It was the third letter that Milady had written to the count , and it asked him to come and see her . D’Artagnan felt angry and jealous . He decided to answer the letter himself , in the name of the Comte de Wardes . “ I shall come tomorrow night at eleven o’clock , ” he wrote . “ But come to me in the dark . ” Kitty was unhappy , but she gave the letter to her mistress . Milady read it , and she smiled with joy . VIII . The Mark on Her Shoulder The next night , at eleven o’clock , Kitty let d’Artagnan into the house . Milady’s room was completely dark , as the letter had asked . She spoke to him softly , believing that he was the Comte de Wardes , and he answered in a whisper . She told him that she loved him , and she gave him a ring with a large blue stone , a sapphire surrounded by diamonds . “ Keep this , ” she said , “ and think of me . ” D’Artagnan left the house before morning . He felt both happy and ashamed , and he went straight to Athos and told him everything . Athos listened in silence , but when he saw the ring , he went pale . He held the ring in his hand for a long time . “ It is strange , ” he said at last . “ I thought that there could not be two rings like this in the world . This sapphire belonged to my family . My mother gave it to me , and I gave it to my wife . ”
