I thought she was dead , but she is alive . ” D’Artagnan wanted to give the sapphire back to him , but Athos refused to take it , because that woman had touched it . In the end they took it to a goldsmith and borrowed money on it . With that money , they paid for their horses and weapons for the war . Kitty was in great danger now , because Milady knew that she had helped d’Artagnan . Aramis knew a lady who was looking for an honest maid for a friend in the country , so Kitty left Paris that same day , after telling d’Artagnan that she would always love him . “ Be careful , ” Athos said to his young friend . “ That woman will never forget what you know , and she will try to kill you . ” Athos was right . Milady sat alone in her room in the Place Royale and swore that she would have her revenge on d’Artagnan . IX . The Siege of La Rochelle In the autumn of 1627 , the French army surrounded La Rochelle . The Cardinal himself was in charge . He hated the Protestants of the city , but he had another reason for this war too . The Duke of Buckingham had sailed from England with a great fleet to help La Rochelle , and his ships were now at the island of Ré , just off the coast . People whispered that the Cardinal had loved the Queen too , and that he hated the Duke for that . D’Artagnan went to the siege with the guards of Monsieur des Essarts . His three friends stayed behind in Paris with the Musketeers , because the King was ill and could not travel yet . For the first time , d’Artagnan was without them , and he felt lonely . He also had no news of Constance , and he thought about her day and night . One evening , as he was walking back to the camp along a quiet road , he saw the barrels of two guns behind a bush . He threw himself to the ground just as the guns fired , and the bullets flew over his head . He jumped up and ran back to the camp before the two men could shoot again . “ That was not an accident , ” he thought . “ Somebody has paid those men to kill me . I am sure that it is Milady . ” Two days later , his captain sent him with a few soldiers to look at one of the enemy’s defences . When the enemy began to shoot from the walls , most of the soldiers ran back , and d’Artagnan stayed behind to help a wounded man . Suddenly two shots came from behind him . One bullet killed the wounded man , and the other missed d’Artagnan by only two inches . He understood at once that these shots had come from his own side , so he fell to the ground and lay still , as if he were dead .
