X . Mrs Elton While he was at Randalls , Frank had one great wish : he wanted a ball . There was a large old room at the Crown inn where people had danced long ago , and he and Emma made plans to use it again . They measured the rooms and counted the couples , and they argued happily about where the supper should be . Mr Woodhouse worried about open windows and cold air , but at last it was all arranged , and the whole village looked forward to it . Then a letter came from Yorkshire . Mrs Churchill was ill again and wanted her nephew at once , so Frank had to go home , and the ball was put off . He came to Hartfield to say goodbye , and he looked very unhappy . He walked about the room for some time , as if he did not know how to begin , and then he spoke in a low voice . “ I called at Miss Bates’s house on my way here . I could not leave without calling there . And in short , Miss Woodhouse , I think you can hardly be quite without suspicion . . . ” He stopped and looked at her as if he wanted to say more . Emma was sure that he was going to speak of love , and she did not wish to hear it , so she said something light about his father . The moment passed , and a few minutes later he was gone . Emma was sorry to see him go , and for a day or two she felt dull and tired of everything . She was quite sure that he was in love with her , and she supposed that she must be a little in love with him . But as the days went by , she noticed that she did not miss him very much . When she imagined their future together , the story always ended in the same way : he asked her to marry him , and she refused . “ I am not really in love , ” she decided at last . “ I like him very much , and I shall always be glad to see him , but that is all . It is a good thing that I am not , for his sake . ” Soon there was a new subject for Highbury to talk about , because Mr Elton came home with his bride . Mrs Elton was a handsome young woman , well dressed and very sure of herself . She was ready to admire whatever she saw , as long as it reminded her of her own family . Her sister Selina had married a rich man , Mr Suckling , and lived at a fine house called Maple Grove , and she talked about it all the time .
