Mr Elton was the young vicar of Highbury , and everybody in the village thought him very handsome and very pleasant . “ Mr Elton is a very good young man , ” said Mr Woodhouse , “ but if you want to show him any kindness , my dear , ask him to come and dine with us one day . That will be a much better thing . ” “ Yes , ask him to dinner , Emma , and help him to the best of the fish and the chicken , ” said Mr Knightley , laughing , “ but leave him to choose his own wife . Depend upon it , a man of six or seven and twenty can take care of himself . ” Emma laughed as well , but she did not change her mind in the least . II . Harriet Smith Not long after the wedding , Emma found the new interest that she had been looking for . There was a school in Highbury kept by Mrs Goddard , an honest , motherly woman who gave her girls plenty of good food and fresh air . One of the girls there was Harriet Smith , a pretty young person of seventeen , and nobody knew who her parents were . Some years before , someone had placed her at the school and paid for her , and that was all that anybody had ever learnt . She had lately become a parlour boarder , which meant that she lived with Mrs Goddard almost as one of the family . One evening Mrs Goddard brought her to Hartfield to play cards with Mr Woodhouse , and Emma was pleased with her at once . Harriet was short and plump and fair , with a fine bloom and soft blue eyes , and her manners were sweet , modest and grateful . She was not clever , but she listened to every word that Emma said and seemed to think her the wisest and most elegant person in the world . That was quite enough for Emma . Before the evening was over , she had decided that Harriet Smith should be her new friend . She would take her away from her poor friends in the village and bring her into good society . She would form her opinions and improve her manners . It would be a very kind thing to do , and it would also be a very interesting one , which suited Emma’s idle time and her love of plans . Harriet had spent the summer at a farm called Abbey - Mill , with a family named Martin who rented their land from Mr Knightley . She talked of them a great deal : of Mrs Martin , of the two daughters who had been at school with her , and above all of the son . “ Mr Martin is so very good - natured , ” she said one day . “ He once walked three miles to bring me some walnuts , because I had said how fond I was of them . And when he heard that I liked his cows , he named a pretty little Welsh cow after me , and now they call her Harriet’s cow . They have eight cows , you know , and two of them are Welsh , which is very uncommon . ”
