The dinner at Randalls was very merry , and Mr Weston had some news to tell . His son Frank was coming to visit in January . Frank was Mr Weston’s son by his first wife , who had died when the boy was small . He had been brought up by her rich brother and his wife , Mr and Mrs Churchill , at their great house in Yorkshire , and he had taken their name . Everyone in Highbury wanted to meet him , but he had never yet come to see his father’s new wife , though he had written her a very pretty letter . “ I have long thought , ” said Mr Weston happily to Emma , “ that you and Frank would like each other very much . ” Emma had often thought about Frank Churchill . She had decided long ago that , if she ever married , he would be the right kind of man for her in age , character and position . But she did not mean to marry anyone , and she smiled and said nothing . Then John Knightley came back into the room with news of his own : it was snowing hard . Mr Woodhouse turned white at once . He was sure that they would never get home , that the horses would fall , that the carriages would overturn , and that they would all have to spend the night in the snow . Mr Knightley went out to look . He came back and said calmly that there was very little snow on the ground and that they could go home quite safely if they started at once . So the carriages were called . Mr Woodhouse and Isabella went in the first . Emma found , a little to her surprise , that she must go in the second carriage alone with Mr Elton . VI . A Proposal in the Carriage The carriage door was shut , and the horses moved off slowly through the snow . Emma began to speak politely about the evening . But Mr Elton had drunk a good deal of Mr Weston’s good wine , and he had not got into the carriage to talk about the weather . Before she could stop him , he had taken her hand and was telling her that he loved her . He had loved her for months , he said , and he would die if she refused him . He was sure that she must have seen his feelings , and he was sure that she could not be cruel to him now . Emma was so astonished that for a moment she could not speak at all . Then she pulled her hand away . “ Mr Elton , you forget yourself . You have taken me for my friend . I shall be very happy to take any message to Miss Smith , but I beg that you will say no more of this to me . ” “ Miss Smith ! ” he repeated in surprise . “ Message to Miss Smith ! What could she possibly have to do with it ? ” “ Do with it ? Your behaviour to her has been very plain , Mr Elton . You have been paying her the most marked attention for weeks . ”
