As Cedric was walking through the dark passages , an old woman stopped him . It was Urfried , Rebecca’s guard . She took him into her small room and closed the door . “ You are a Saxon , ” she said . “ I can hear it in your voice , even though you speak like a monk . Do you not know me , Cedric of Rotherwood ? ” Cedric looked at her in the dim light , and then he cried out . She was Ulrica , the daughter of an old friend of his father . Long ago Front - de - Boeuf’s father had attacked her family’s castle and killed her father and her brothers . Everyone believed that she had died with them . Instead , she had been kept here as a prisoner for many years , until she grew old and hard and full of hate . “ I have waited all my life for revenge , ” she said . “ Now it is coming . When your friends attack the castle , I will help them from inside . Watch for a red flag on the eastern tower . When you see it , attack with all your strength , because then the castle will be in trouble from within . ” Before Cedric could reach the gate , Front - de - Boeuf himself met him on the stairs . The Norman took him for a real monk , and he gave him a secret message to carry to Philip de Malvoisin , asking him to send soldiers to help . Cedric took the message , walked out of the gate and gave it straight to Locksley . When Front - de - Boeuf went to see his prisoners , he found the jester sitting in Cedric’s place , and he was so furious that he almost killed him there and then . But there was no time . The attack was about to begin . Meanwhile , in another room of the castle , Rebecca had found Ivanhoe . Urfried had made her help with the wounded , and so she had come to the small room where he was lying . She sat down beside his bed at once and treated his wound again . “ Rebecca , ” he said weakly , “ why are you here ? What has happened to us ? ” “ We are prisoners in the castle of Front - de - Boeuf , ” said Rebecca . “ But there are people outside who want to free us . Can you hear the noise ? I think they are getting ready to attack . ” Ivanhoe tried to get up , but he fell back on his pillow . He could not even reach the window . “ If only I could see what is happening , ” he said . “ If I were on my feet , I would be fighting with them . ” “ I will look for you , ” said Rebecca , “ and I will tell you everything I see . ” XI . Fire at Torquilstone Rebecca stood at the narrow window , hiding behind a large shield so that no arrow could reach her , and she described the battle to Ivanhoe as it happened . “ The archers are coming out of the forest , ” she said . “ There are so many of them , and their arrows fly as thick as snow . The men on the walls are shooting back . Now a group of men is running towards the outer wall , with a knight in black armour at their head . He is the tallest of them all . ”
