The Black Knight led his men across the moat on a bridge of planks and attacked the main gate . De Bracy met him there , and the two knights fought hand to hand . At last the Black Knight struck De Bracy down and held his sword at his throat . “ Surrender , De Bracy , ” he said , and then he bent and whispered a few words in his ear . De Bracy turned white , and when he answered , “ I surrender , ” his voice was very different . Then he added quickly , “ Sir Knight , Wilfred of Ivanhoe is in the castle . He is wounded , and he will die in the fire if nobody helps him . ” The Black Knight ran into the burning castle . The smoke was so thick that he could hardly see , but he found the room , lifted Ivanhoe in his arms like a child and carried him out into the fresh air . Rebecca was not with him , because when the flames began to rise , the Templar had come into Ivanhoe’s room and seized her . “ Come with me , ” he said , “ or you will burn . ” “ Save the knight first , ” cried Rebecca . “ I will not leave him here to die . ” But Bois - Guilbert carried her away by force , threw her across his horse and rode for the gate . Athelstane saw him go , and when he saw a woman in the Templar’s arms , he thought that it was Rowena . “ Stop , villain ! ” he shouted , and he ran at the Templar with a heavy mace . Bois - Guilbert raised his sword and struck him on the head , and Athelstane fell to the ground and lay still . The Templar broke through the outlaws at the gate and galloped away into the forest with Rebecca . Meanwhile Cedric had found Rowena and led her to safety , and the outlaws had brought Isaac up from his cell . High above them , on the top of the burning tower , stood Ulrica . Her long grey hair blew in the wind , and she was singing an old Saxon song of war . Then the tower fell with a great crash , and she disappeared into the flames . XII . Under the Great Oak The next morning the outlaws gathered under a huge oak tree in the forest , where Locksley sat like a king among his men and divided everything that they had taken from the castle . Cedric came to thank him , and he was sad and serious , because Athelstane had been killed , or so everybody believed . His body could not be found among the ashes of the castle , but many people had seen him fall under the Templar’s sword . “ I owe you my freedom and the freedom of my ward , ” Cedric said to Locksley . “ I have no money with me now , but if you ever come to Rotherwood , everything I have is yours . ” Then he turned to Gurth , who was standing quietly at the back , and he did something that nobody had expected . He took off the brass ring that had always been around the swineherd’s neck . “ You are a free man from today , Gurth , ” he said . “ You have earned it a hundred times . And I will give you land of your own as well . ”
