The prince went pale . “ Then everything is lost , ” he said . “ The people love him , and they will rise and follow him . ” Waldemar Fitzurse , however , had a darker idea . “ Richard is alone , ” he said quietly . “ Men die in the forest every day . If we act quickly , nobody need ever know how it happened . ” De Bracy refused to take part . “ I am a soldier , not a murderer , ” he said . “ I will fight Richard in battle if I must , but I will not kill him from behind a tree . ” So Fitzurse said that he would do it himself . He chose a group of men whom he could trust , and that same evening they rode out of York towards the forest . XIII . The Trial at Templestowe Templestowe was a strong , grey house of the Knights Templar , surrounded by high walls and towers . Bois - Guilbert had brought Rebecca there because he believed that she would be safe from her friends behind its walls . But on the very day when they arrived , the head of the whole order rode in at the gate . He was the Grand Master , Lucas de Beaumanoir , an old man with a long white beard and a hard , narrow mind . He had come to England to make the knights obey the strict rules of their order again , and he was not pleased by anything he saw . A few hours later Isaac arrived at the gate with the Prior’s letter . The Grand Master took it from him and read it himself . When he learnt that one of his knights was keeping a young Jewish woman in the house , he became very angry . “ This is the work of the devil , ” he said . “ No true Templar would behave like this unless he had been bewitched . There is no doubt that this woman must be a witch . ” Isaac begged and wept , but the guards drove him away from the gate . He went to a friend of his , the rabbi Nathan , who lived in a village nearby , and the two old men sat together and waited in fear for news . The Grand Master decided that Rebecca should be tried before all the knights of the house . Albert de Malvoisin , the head of Templestowe , was Bois - Guilbert’s friend , and he was afraid that the Grand Master would punish the Templar severely . So he made a cruel plan : if Rebecca was found guilty of witchcraft , then everything would be her fault , and Bois - Guilbert would be seen as her victim . Malvoisin found witnesses and told them what to say . The trial was held the next day in the great hall . Rebecca stood in front of the judges , pale but calm , with her veil over her face . Bois - Guilbert sat among the knights , with his face turned away . The first witnesses were soldiers from Bois - Guilbert’s band . One of them said that Rebecca had healed a wounded man by saying strange words over him in an unknown language . Another said that he had seen her on the walls of Torquilstone , and that she had changed into a white swan and flown three times round the tower . Many people in the hall believed every word .
