XVI . Rebecca’s Farewell When the first shock was over , Ivanhoe asked the Grand Master whether he had done his duty as a knight in the combat . The Grand Master answered that he had , and he declared before everyone that Rebecca was free and innocent . “ I will not take the dead man’s arms , ” said Ivanhoe , “ and I will not shame his body . He fought bravely for many years in the Holy Land . It was not my hand that struck him down today , but the hand of God . ” Just then there was a thunder of hooves , and the Black Knight rode into the field at the head of a large band of soldiers . “ I am too late , ” he said , looking around . “ I wanted Bois - Guilbert for myself . Ivanhoe , you can hardly sit on your horse . Was it wise to take such a risk ? ” “ God has taken this proud man , my lord , ” answered Ivanhoe . “ He was not meant to die by your hand . ” Then King Richard raised his helmet , and one of his knights laid a hand on the shoulder of Albert de Malvoisin and arrested him for treason against the king . The Grand Master was furious that the king had come into a house of the Temple with soldiers , but Richard pointed to the towers , where the royal flag of England was already flying instead of the Templars ’ banner . At last the old man gave the order to leave . The Templars rode slowly away in a long dark line , with their trumpets playing a wild eastern march , as if to show that they were going because their Grand Master wished it and not because they were afraid . Rebecca saw and heard none of this . She was in her father’s arms , and he was holding her as if he would never let her go . “ Let us go and thank the good young knight , ” said Isaac . “ He has risked his life for you . ” “ No , father , ” said Rebecca quickly . “ Not now . I could not speak to him now without saying more than I should . Let us leave this place at once . I beg you , for my mother’s sake . ” Isaac looked at her face and understood more than she had said . He did not ask any more questions , and they left the field quietly together . The judges of the king did their work in the following weeks . Malvoisin and his brother , who had both committed many crimes , were put to death . De Bracy escaped to France . Fitzurse was sent out of the country , and Prince John was forgiven by his brother , as usual , and sent to live with their mother . Soon afterwards Cedric was invited to the king’s court at York . At first he grumbled , but he went . He had to admit that there was no more hope of a Saxon king in England . Athelstane had refused to marry Rowena , and Rowena had always refused to marry Athelstane . Besides , the old man was proud of his son , and the king treated him with such warmth and good humour that after seven days Cedric gave his consent to the marriage of Wilfred and Rowena . The wedding took place in the great church of York , and the king himself was present . Normans and Saxons came together to celebrate it , and many people saw in it a sign that the two peoples would one day become one . Gurth , who was now a free man , stood behind his young master in fine new clothes , and Wamba wore a new cap with silver bells .
