“ Fellows , ” said the Prior , “ can you show us the way to the house of Cedric the Saxon ? We hope to spend the night there . ” Gurth did not want to help Normans , and he said nothing . Wamba , however , gave them a long and confusing description of the road . If they had followed it , they would have been lost in the forest until morning . The riders thanked him and went on . They had not gone far when they met a man who was walking alone through the dark trees . He wore the long , rough robe of a pilgrim , and he carried a palm branch , which showed that he had visited the holy places in Jerusalem . People called such a traveller a palmer . “ I know the house of Cedric well , ” said the palmer quietly . “ I am going there myself , so you may follow me . ” He led them through the forest so surely that the Templar looked at him with surprise . Soon they saw the lights of Rotherwood in front of them . It was a long , low wooden house with a wall and a deep ditch around it . Saxons like Cedric lived simply , but they were proud , and they did not forget that their families had once been the lords of England . As they waited at the gate , the Templar spoke to the Prior in a low voice . “ Tell me about this Saxon lady , ” he said . “ You promised me that she was the most beautiful woman in England . ” “ The Lady Rowena , ” said the Prior , smiling . “ She is Cedric’s ward , and her family goes back to King Alfred himself . But be careful , Sir Brian , because Cedric guards her like a dragon . I have heard that he sent his own son away because the young man looked at her too often . ” II . A Night at Rotherwood The great hall of Rotherwood was long and smoky , with a huge fire burning in the middle of the floor . At the top of the hall stood a raised table for the master and his guests , and below it there was a longer table for the servants . Cedric the Saxon sat in his tall chair . He was a broad , strong man of about sixty , with light hair , blue eyes and a quick temper . He was a good master to his people , but he hated the Normans with all his heart . Cedric was in a bad mood that evening . Gurth and Wamba were late , and he was also thinking sadly about his son . The young man , Wilfred , had disobeyed him . He had followed King Richard , a Norman king , to the Holy Land , and he had fallen in love with the Lady Rowena . Cedric had other plans for Rowena , and he wanted her to marry Athelstane of Coningsburgh , because Athelstane came from the old royal family of the Saxons . If those two married , Cedric believed , the Saxons might one day rule England again . So he had disinherited his son and sent him away , and he did not allow anyone to speak his name .
