“ The Disinherited Knight , ” said Gurth . “ He won the tournament today . ” The outlaws looked at each other in surprise . Then their leader asked Gurth to tell them the whole story , and Gurth told them about the armour , Isaac and Rebecca’s purse . “ It is strange , ” said the leader . “ A merchant who gives money back ! But I believe you . We do not rob brave men , and we do not rob those who are poor . Your master fought well today against the Normans , and we were glad to see it . Go , and take your money with you . ” One of the outlaws , a tall miller with a heavy stick , said that he wanted to test the swineherd’s courage first . They fought with sticks in the moonlight , and after a hard battle Gurth knocked the miller down . The outlaws laughed and cheered , and two of them walked with Gurth to the edge of the forest so that nobody else would trouble him . When Gurth told his master what had happened , the knight was silent for a long time . “ Rebecca has a generous heart , ” he said at last . “ I hope that one day I can repay her family for their kindness . ” VI . The Black Knight On the second day there was a general battle . Fifty knights fought on each side , and they were not allowed to kill , but they could strike and push each other as hard as they liked . The Disinherited Knight led one side , and the Templar led the other , with Front - de - Boeuf and Athelstane , who had joined the Normans because he was jealous of the young stranger . The trumpets sounded , and the two groups crashed together in the middle of the field . Soon the ground was covered with broken lances , fallen horses and men who could not stand . After an hour only a few knights were still fighting . The Disinherited Knight found himself attacked by three men at the same time : the Templar , Front - de - Boeuf and Athelstane . He defended himself bravely , but he was tired , and it seemed that he must fall . Then something happened that nobody had expected . Among the knights on his side there was a tall man in plain black armour , with no picture on his shield . All morning he had done very little . He had defended himself when someone attacked him , but he had not attacked anyone , and the crowd had given him a name : the Black Sluggard , the lazy knight . Now , however , the Black Knight seemed to wake up . He rode into the fight like a storm . With one blow he knocked Front - de - Boeuf off his horse . Then he took an axe from Athelstane’s hand and struck the Saxon so hard on the helmet that Athelstane fell senseless to the ground . After that , the Black Knight rode slowly back to his place and watched quietly , as if none of it had anything to do with him . The Disinherited Knight now had only the Templar in front of him . At that moment the Templar’s horse fell , and Prince John quickly threw down his staff to end the battle . The Disinherited Knight was the winner again .
