“ I want the Lady Rowena , ” he said to the Templar . “ She is rich , and she is beautiful . Cedric will never let me marry her , so I shall take her . My men will dress as outlaws , attack the Saxons in the forest and carry the lady off to Front - de - Boeuf’s castle of Torquilstone . Then I shall come as a knight and rescue her . What woman could refuse to marry the man who saved her ? ” “ It is a good plan , ” said Bois - Guilbert , and his dark eyes shone . He was thinking of someone else : the merchant’s beautiful daughter . “ I will help you , ” he said , “ but I want a prize of my own . ” Meanwhile , deep in the forest , the Black Knight was looking for somewhere to spend the night . At last he came to a small stone chapel and a hut , where a hermit lived . The hermit was a huge man in a monk’s robe , with a red face and arms like a blacksmith’s . At first he did not want to let the stranger in . He offered him only dried peas and water , and he said that he lived on prayer alone . But the Black Knight was a cheerful guest . He tasted the peas and smiled . “ Holy father , ” he said , “ you are a big , strong man . Your arms are like a soldier’s . Do you really grow so fat on dried peas and water ? ” The hermit looked at him for a long moment . Then he laughed . He went to a cupboard and brought out a large meat pie and a big jar of wine , which , he said , had been left by a kind forester . The two men ate and drank together , and then they sang songs late into the night . The hermit told his guest that people called him the Clerk of Copmanhurst . The knight said only that people called him the Black Knight , and sometimes the Sluggard . Neither man asked any more questions , but each of them understood that the other was not what he seemed . VIII . An Ambush in the Forest Cedric left Ashby the next morning with Rowena , Athelstane and their servants . He was in a dark mood . He had seen his son wounded and had not gone to him , and now he did not even know whether Wilfred was alive . He was also angry with Gurth , who had served the Disinherited Knight without his permission , and he had ordered his men to tie the swineherd’s hands and bring him home as a prisoner . Wamba rode beside his friend and tried to cheer him up with jokes . In the middle of the forest they found a group of people waiting beside the path . It was Isaac and Rebecca , with a closed litter carried between two horses . The men whom Isaac had paid to protect them had heard that there were outlaws nearby , and they had run away with the horses , leaving the travellers alone .
