“ I am ready , ” he said . “ I will help anyone who has been treated unjustly . ” The hermit took off his robe . Under it , to everybody’s surprise , he wore a soldier’s coat of leather , and he picked up a heavy wooden staff and a sword . “ I am coming too , ” he said . “ I have prayed long enough , and now it is time to fight . ” Locksley laughed . “ Of course , ” he said . “ Everyone in the forest knows our holy hermit . His name is Friar Tuck , and he is one of my best men . ” That night , Locksley’s men gathered quietly in the forest near Torquilstone . Inside the castle , De Bracy and the Templar had already taken off their green disguises . The prisoners had been divided : Cedric and Athelstane were locked in one room , Rowena was in another , Rebecca had been taken to a high room in a tower , and Isaac had been thrown into a deep , dark cell under the ground . The man in the litter had been carried into a small room by De Bracy’s men , who did not yet know who he was . IX . Three Prisoners at Torquilstone Isaac sat on the cold stone floor of his cell for many hours , with his hands folded and his eyes on the door . He was not a brave fighter , but he had lived all his life among enemies , and he knew that fear would not help him . When the heavy door opened at last , Front - de - Boeuf came in , followed by two of the Templar’s eastern servants . They carried a basket of charcoal and set it under an iron frame that stood in the corner of the cell . “ Do you see this , old man ? ” said Front - de - Boeuf . “ Unless you pay me a thousand pounds of silver , you will lie on that frame over the fire , and my men will light it . ” “ A thousand pounds ! ” said Isaac . “ Sir knight , there is not so much money in the whole of York . Even if I sold everything I own , I could not find it . ” “ Then you will burn , ” said the Norman , and he signalled to his servants . Isaac looked at the fire and closed his eyes . “ I will pay , ” he said in a low voice . “ My friends in York will help me . But you must set my daughter free as well , and let her travel to York with me . ” Front - de - Boeuf laughed . “ Your daughter is not mine to give , because I have given her to Sir Brian de Bois - Guilbert . ” For the first time the old man forgot his fear completely . He jumped up and stood in front of the huge knight , shaking with anger . “ Then you will get nothing ! ” he cried . “ Do what you like with me . You may burn me , and you may tear me to pieces , but not one silver penny will you have from me unless my child comes back to me safe and unhurt . She is the light of my eyes , and I would give my own life a hundred times for her . ”
