Then he opened a large chest in the corner of the saloon . It was full of bars of gold . I guessed that they weighed more than four thousand pounds . The captain wrote an address in modern Greek on the lid , and four sailors carried the chest out of the room . That night I heard the boat leave the ship and come back two hours later . The gold had been delivered , but to whom ? The next day the water became so hot that I had to take off my coat . When the panels opened , I saw the sea boiling around us , white and then red . We were near the island of Santorini , where a volcano was erupting under the sea , and the captain had wanted to show it to me . By eleven o’clock we shall be on dry land , alive or dead . ” He left before I could answer . I spent a terrible day . Part of me longed to be free , but part of me could not bear to leave the Nautilus and all its wonders before my studies were finished . I went into the saloon for one last look at its treasures , like a man leaving his country for ever . At eight o’clock I put on warm clothes , collected my notes and waited . At a few minutes to nine I went to the library . Then the sound of the screw changed and stopped , and I felt a slight shock . The Nautilus had come to rest on the bottom of the ocean . At that moment the door of the saloon opened , and Captain Nemo came in . “ Ah , Professor , I have been looking for you , ” he said pleasantly . “ Do you know the history of Spain ? ” With my head full of our plans , I could hardly remember a single fact about it .
