At that very moment a stone fell at our feet . A group of islanders with bows and slings was running towards us from the trees . We jumped into the boat and rowed back to the ship as fast as we could . I hurried to warn the captain , but he was playing his organ , and he only smiled . “ Are you surprised to find savages when you set foot on a strange land , Professor ? ” he said . “ Where are there no savages ? And are these people worse than any others ? Even if every person on this island came to attack us , the Nautilus would have nothing to fear . ” The next morning the islanders were back in their canoes , hundreds of them , and arrows were falling on the platform . I reminded the captain that the hatches would have to be opened the next day for fresh air , and that the islanders might then come inside . “ Let them come , ” he said . “ I have no wish to see a single one of these poor people killed because of my visit . ” The following afternoon the hatches were opened . A crowd of islanders was waiting on the platform . But the first man who took hold of the iron rail of the ladder jumped back with a terrible cry , and so did the ten men who followed him . Ned rushed up to fight them , but as soon as he touched the rail , he too was thrown backwards . “ I’ve been struck by lightning ! ” he shouted . The rail was charged with electricity . It gave a powerful shock to anyone who touched it , but it did not kill . The islanders fled in terror . At that moment the last wave of the high tide lifted the Nautilus , at exactly the minute which the captain had announced , and we sailed safely out of the Torres Strait . VII . The Coral Cemetery We crossed the Timor Sea and turned towards the Indian Ocean . On the eighteenth of January the weather was bad , and the sea was rough . When I went up on the platform , the officer did not say his usual sentence . Instead , Captain Nemo appeared and looked at the horizon through his telescope for a long time . He seemed very excited , and the officer even more so . I could see nothing , so I fetched my own telescope , but the moment I raised it to my eye , it was pulled out of my hands . I turned round and saw Captain Nemo , but I hardly recognised him . His eyes were burning , his teeth were tight , and his whole body was shaking with anger . He was not looking at me , but at some point far away on the sea . “ Professor , ” he said at last , “ I must ask you to keep the promise you made . You and your companions must be locked in your cabin until I set you free . ”
