But Thornton fell on his knees beside Buck . He put his head against Buck’s head and shook him back and forth , and the people who came near heard him cursing Buck long and softly and lovingly . “ Sir ! Sir ! ” cried the rich man . “ I’ll give you a thousand for him , sir , a thousand , sir , twelve hundred ! ” Thornton stood up . Tears were running down his cheeks . “ Sir , ” he said , “ no , sir . You can go to hell , sir . That’s the best answer I can give you . ” Buck took Thornton’s hand in his teeth . Thornton shook him back and forth . The crowd moved back to a respectful distance , and nobody tried to come near them again . XII . The Song of the Pack With the sixteen hundred dollars that Buck had won in five minutes , Thornton paid his debts . Then he set off to the east with his partners , Buck and half a dozen other dogs , to look for a lost gold mine . Many men had searched for it , and many had never come back . For Buck it was a time of endless happiness . They hunted and fished and wandered through unknown wilderness for more than a year . They never found the lost mine . But in a wide valley they found a stream where the gold lay like yellow butter in the washing pan . Every day they earned thousands of dollars , and they piled the bags of gold outside their hut like firewood . There was little for the dogs to do now , and Buck spent long hours dreaming by the fire . The hairy man of the old times came to him more often , and the call sounded more strongly than ever in the depths of the forest . Sometimes , as Buck lay in camp , his head would suddenly lift . Then he would jump up and run off through the forest for hours , listening to its sounds and reading them as a man reads a book . One night he woke with the hair on his neck rising . From the forest came the call , clearer than ever before : a long howl , like the howl of a husky and yet not like it . He ran silently through the woods , and in an open space among the trees he saw a long , thin timber wolf , sitting with its nose pointed at the sky . The wolf ran away , and Buck ran after it . Several times he trapped it , and each time he walked around it in a friendly way . In the end the wolf saw that Buck meant no harm , and they touched noses . Then the wolf started off at an easy run , and he made it clear that Buck should come too . They ran side by side up the creek , over the hills and down into a flat land of forests and streams , hour after hour . Buck was filled with wild happiness . He knew that at last he was answering the call . He was running free beside his wild brother , as he had done before in that other , half - remembered world .
