II . The Man in the Red Sweater Four men carried the box into a small yard with high walls . A heavy man in a red sweater came out and signed the driver’s book . Buck understood at once that this was his next enemy , and he threw himself wildly against the bars . The man smiled grimly and brought out a small axe and a club . “ You’re not going to take him out now ? ” the driver asked . “ Sure , ” the man replied , and he drove the axe into the box . The four men ran away at once and climbed onto the top of the wall , where they were safe . From there they got ready to watch the performance . “ Now , you red - eyed devil , ” said the man , when he had made a hole big enough for Buck’s body . He dropped the axe and took the club in his right hand . Buck really looked like a red - eyed devil . His hair stood up , his mouth was full of foam , and there was a mad light in his eyes . He threw all his hundred and forty pounds of fury straight at the man . But in the air , just as his jaws were about to close , a terrible blow stopped him and threw him to the ground . He had never been hit with a club in his life , and he did not understand . He jumped again , and again the blow came . This time he knew it was the club , but his madness was stronger than his fear . A dozen times he attacked , and a dozen times the club knocked him down . At last he got up slowly , too weak to rush . Blood was running from his nose , his mouth and his ears . Then the man walked up and gave him a dreadful blow on the nose . With a roar almost like a lion’s , Buck threw himself at the man once more . But the man caught him calmly by the lower jaw and threw him in a circle through the air . For the last time Buck rushed , and the man struck the clever blow that he had kept back for so long . Buck fell and lay still . “ He knows how to break a dog , that one , ” one of the men on the wall cried happily . Buck’s senses came back to him , but not his strength . He lay where he had fallen and watched the man in the red sweater . “ ‘ Answers to the name of Buck , ’ ” the man read aloud from the bar owner’s letter . “ Well , Buck , my boy , ” he went on in a friendly voice , “ we’ve had our little fight , and the best thing now is to forget it . You’ve learned your place , and I know mine . Be a good dog , and all will go well . Be a bad dog , and I’ll beat you hard . Understand ? ”
