On the ship there were two other dogs . One was a big , snow - white dog called Spitz , who came from the far north . He was friendly in a dishonest way : he would smile into your face while he was planning some trick . At the first meal he stole from Buck’s food . Buck jumped to punish him , but François’s whip flew through the air and hit the thief first . That was fair of François , Buck decided . The other dog was called Dave . He was gloomy and silent , and he only wanted to be left alone . When the Narwhal rolled in a storm and Buck and Curly grew wild with fear , Dave only raised his head , gave them a bored look and went back to sleep . Every day the weather grew colder . At last , one morning , the ship’s engine was quiet , and François brought the dogs up on deck . At his first step , Buck’s feet sank into something white and soft , very like mud . He jumped back with a snort . More of this white stuff was falling through the air . He smelled it curiously and then licked some up . It bit like fire , and the next moment it was gone . This puzzled him , and he tried it again , with the same result . The men who were watching laughed loudly , and Buck felt ashamed , though he did not know why . It was his first snow . III . The Law of Club and Fang Buck’s first day on the beach at Dyea was like a nightmare . He had been pulled suddenly from the heart of civilised life and thrown into a world of wild , ancient things . Here there was no peace , no rest and not a moment of safety . These dogs and men were not town dogs and men . They were wild , all of them , and they knew no law except the law of club and fang . His first lesson was one he never forgot . Near the log store , Curly went up to a husky in her friendly way . He was as big as a grown wolf , but only half as big as she was . There was no warning . He jumped in like a flash , his teeth closed with a metal click , he jumped back again , and Curly’s face was torn open from eye to jaw . That was how wolves fought : they struck and jumped away . But there was more to it . Thirty or forty huskies ran to the spot and stood around the two dogs in a silent circle , licking their lips . Curly rushed at her enemy , who struck again and jumped aside . When she rushed a second time , he knocked her off her feet with his chest . She never stood up again . This was what the huskies had been waiting for . They closed in on her , and she disappeared , screaming with pain , under the mass of bodies . It happened so unexpectedly that Buck could hardly believe it . He saw Spitz put out his red tongue in the way he had of laughing . François and three men with clubs drove the huskies away , but it was too late . Curly lay dead in the trampled snow .
