Another lesson . So that was how they did it ! Buck chose a place and , with a lot of wasted effort , dug a hole for himself . In a moment the heat of his body filled the small space , and he was asleep . When the noises of the camp woke him , he did not know where he was . It had snowed in the night , and he was completely buried . A great wave of fear swept through him . It was the fear that a wild animal feels in a trap . Buck had never seen a trap , but this fear came from his wild ancestors , who had lived long , long ago . With a fierce snarl he jumped straight up into the daylight , and the snow flew around him in a shining cloud . “ What did I say ? ” François cried to Perrault . “ That Buck learns quick as anything ! ” Perrault nodded seriously . He was carrying important letters for the Canadian government , and he was very pleased to have Buck . IV . The Long Trail Within an hour three more huskies joined the team , so now there were nine dogs , and soon they were moving up the trail towards the Dyea Canyon . The work was hard , but Buck found that he did not hate it . The biggest surprise was the change in Dave and Sol - leks . The harness made them into new dogs . They were awake and eager now , and they grew angry with any dog that caused delay . Pulling the sled seemed to be the only thing that gave them happiness . Dave pulled nearest to the sled , with Buck in front of him and Sol - leks in front of Buck . The rest of the team stretched out ahead in a single line , and Spitz ran at the front as the leader . Dave and Sol - leks were excellent teachers . Dave never bit Buck without a reason , but he never failed to bite him when he needed it . By evening Buck had learned his work so well that they had almost stopped biting him . It was a hard day’s run , up the canyon , across ice and deep snow and over the great Chilcoot Pass . Late that night they reached the huge camp at Lake Bennett , where thousands of gold seekers were building boats for the spring . Buck dug his hole in the snow and slept like the dead , but all too early he was pulled out into the cold darkness and harnessed to the sled again . Day after day they travelled . They always broke camp in the dark , and they always made camp after dark , ate their bit of fish and crawled into the snow to sleep . Perrault often walked ahead on snowshoes to pack the snow for the dogs . He was in a hurry , and he knew a lot about ice , which was necessary , because the autumn ice was very thin .
