The fight for leadership had to come . Buck wanted it , because he had been caught by the pride of the trail . It is a strange pride . It keeps dogs working until their last breath , and it breaks their hearts if they are taken out of the harness . It was Dave’s pride and Sol - leks’s pride . It made Spitz punish lazy dogs , and it made him afraid of Buck . And it was Buck’s pride too . He began to challenge Spitz openly . One snowy morning Pike , who was lazy , did not appear for work . It was a song as old as the breed itself . When Buck howled , he felt the same pain of living that his wild ancestors had felt long ago , and the same fear of the cold and the dark . VI . Buck never went near Spitz without snarling , and he walked up and down in front of his enemy like a bully . François shouted and stamped his feet , but as soon as his back was turned , the dogs started fighting again . He knew that Buck was behind all the trouble , and Buck knew that he knew . But Buck was too clever to be caught again .
