When she could not open the paper on her chopsticks, the server had opened it for her and gone back to the other tables without a speech. Rosa wanted that woman to know the food had mattered. At home she would leave extra coins on the table. She had read that people in Japan did not expect that, and she left the coins anyway, because thanks, in her family, looked like money. She set them beside the receipt and reached for her coat.
