What the Policy Left Off the List
Owen wanted the clinic to treat his ankle before the swelling made the walk back to the hotel a worse idea. He was in Chamonix, on the valley floor, and the path he had left was a signed walk, not a climb. The receptionist asked how he would pay. He said he had travel insurance, then realized he had never read past the words "medical emergency" on the front of the policy.
He sat in the waiting room and opened the document on his phone. The medical section was short and clear: treatment for an unexpected injury could be claimed, with a receipt and a note from the doctor. The next heading was exclusions. Mountaineering was there. So were scuba diving and off-piste skiing. Hiking was not on the list. Neither was walking.
