The Bowl She Wanted the Word to Explain
Claire had one question saved for a ceramics shop in Kyoto, and she asked it of the first uneven bowl she was willing to risk. Is this wabi-sabi? She wanted the answer to be yes. If the owner granted the word, the afternoon would prove a thing she had underlined on the plane: that a language can give you a perception you did not bring with you.
She had met the idea under two names, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis and linguistic relativity. What she wanted from it was the strong claim, that the language you speak decides what you are able to see. A weaker claim, that a language can lean on your attention, would have been too modest for the journey. She had not come this far for a lean.
