The Answer on the Bridge
Lila wanted one answer, and she wanted it away from her desk. All morning, people stopped in her doorway. She asked Owen to have lunch near London Bridge, where the two of them could sit and finish a meal.
The restaurant was small. They took a table by the window. She could not see the river from the chair, only the street and a line of buses. Her notebook stayed in her bag. She wanted it to stay there.
They ordered. Lila asked for a sandwich. Owen asked for soup, and a coffee. She asked for water. While they waited, he talked about the wind on the walk over. She let him talk. The question could wait until the plates were down.
The sandwich came, and the soup. Steam rose off the bowl. Owen lifted his spoon.
