The Line Under the List

Omar stood at the front desk with a short list in his hand. Ms Patel had written it that morning: answer the phone, greet visitors, and keep the desk tidy. He read it twice. It felt complete.

Then Mr Berg came through the door with a heavy bag and a wet coat. "I have a meeting upstairs," he said. "The elevator is not moving. Can you walk me up? I do not know this building."

Omar looked at the list. Walking a guest was not on it. The phone was. If he left, a call could come in and nobody would answer. If he stayed, Mr Berg would look for the room alone. Omar wanted the paper to choose, and it did not.

He kept one hand near the phone and called across the quiet office.
