Rosa Opens the Curtain a Little
Rosa wanted to read one sentence in her letter before she took it to the post office. She had written the letter at night, under the lamp. In the morning she was not sure of that sentence. The lamp made the paper look yellow, and on yellow paper a pale pencil mark was hard to see.
Her father was asleep in the chair by the window. The curtain was closed. He liked it closed, because the sun made that chair too warm, and bright light woke him. Rosa wanted the sentence to be clear. She also wanted him to stay asleep. She wanted both, and the room could not give her both at once.
She put her hand on the curtain. If she opened it all the way, the sun would fall across his face.
