The Cracked Pot
Lena wanted the tomato plant in the ground before the roots dried. The pot had cracked on the way home, and a thin line of soil was already on the step. She could see pale roots at the break. The plant was leaning, and the leaves looked duller than in the shop.
The near bed was the easy place, right by the water tap. She knelt and pushed her fingers into it. The top was dust. Under that, the soil was packed and hard, and her nail bent against it. A hole there would be a scrape, not a place for roots. If she forced the plant in, those roots would fold. Still, the tap was right there. Water would be easy. From the back fence she would have to carry every drop as well as the soil, and her arms were already tired from the walk.
