Nora Wants the Morning
Nora worked nights in a small bakery. She wanted one thing before sleep. She wanted to walk her son, Theo, to the corner while the morning was still new. On other days she came home too late and found only his cup in the sink. So on this night she kept looking at the sky.
The street outside was dark. Inside, the ovens were hot and the lights stayed on. Nora shaped bread while the city slept. A car passed. Then another. Then the street went quiet. Quiet meant the night was still long, and Theo's morning was still far away.
She knew the night by small signs. The radio played songs with nobody talking. The other baker stopped singing. Flour sat on her sleeves. Her feet hurt, and she moved her weight from one foot to the other.
