Maya had made one promise , and Leo was not going to forget it . At breakfast he put his spoon down and said , " Tonight . A real planet . Not a picture . " Maya had said yes on a clear morning , when she felt sure of herself . Now the evening was here , and a thin cloud sat over the city . They took their coats to the balcony after dinner . The street below was noisy , and the windows across the road were bright . Leo looked up , then at his sister . " I only see lamps , " he said . " Give it a minute , " Maya said . She had checked a simple sky chart that morning . The chart put Jupiter low in the sky , brighter than the stars near it . She did not want to recite every planet . Leo had heard that list at school . He wanted one light he could point at and call by its name . A plane crossed above the building opposite . Its lights blinked . Leo raised his arm . Maya caught his sleeve . " That one is moving , and the lights blink . A planet does not race across the roof . It sits with the stars , and it does not blink . " They waited . Leo put his hands in his pockets . The cloud stayed where it was . Maya almost said they could try another night . She stopped herself . An excuse would be easy to say and hard for Leo to forget . Then the cloud opened a little , and a strong white point showed in the gap . It did not flash . It did not cross the roof . Maya let out the breath she had been holding . " There . That is Jupiter . It travels around the Sun , the same as Earth does . It is much farther away , so from here it looks like a small dot . It is still a huge world , with bands of cloud and storms that last a long time . " Leo stared at it . " Can people live there ? " " Not the way we live here , " Maya said . " You could not stand on it . It is mostly thick cloud and gas . But you can see it from this balcony with your own eyes . That was the promise . " Leo kept looking until the cloud closed again . He did not ask for a second planet . He did not ask her to explain the whole sky . When they went inside , he touched the glass of the door once and left his hand there for a moment . " The cloud can come back tomorrow , " he said . " I already saw it . "
